Camping challenge #1 met

It took a lot of research, but I found an alternate campsite for the upcoming holiday weekend which I'm hoping will be more suitable. Granite Flat on the Truckee River is just 1 mile south of Truckee and on the way to Squaw Valley. Less remote and hopefully less kid-friendly than the Stampede Reservoir option. Since I've caught a nasty cold, I'm still less than 100% enthusiastic about sleeping in my tent during the 40 degree mountain nights - but frugality has it's price (literally and figuratively)! I'm also wondering what's wrong with the place, since there was plenty of availability just a few days before Memorial Day weekend. I'm trying to see if I can do a trip on $50.00 per day (half of the $100 per day challenge I've met on my last two road trips). So far - cost for three nights lodging = $60.00.

The good news is, I was able to reserve a walk-in campsite, right along the river. I'm hoping the bike trail goes up that far and I'm trying to work in a little kayak expedition (on Tahoe) for Sunday afternoon (she says while sneezing).

Working with Reserve America was a bit challenging as the first customer service rep I spoke with wasn't "authorized" to waive the cancel fee on my first reservation (which they cancelled).
Call #2 straightened that out - I'll have to check the credit card bill.

This must be the adventure post - I've mentioned a "challenge" three times!

First Sunday

So here I go, attempting to create a blog. Already my title is mispelled and I'm not sure how to fix it. I'm hoping my computer literacy will improve as I embark on this journey (also my typing).

It's a rainy Sunday in the Eastern Sierra, which is a rare weather event here. Usually H20 falls in the form of snow or brief thundershowers. It's finally spring and the aspen trees are leafing, so I'm sure they're welcoming the rain, as am I.

We start the travel journey with an episode in frustration. With a Memorial Day mini-vacation only a week away - the plans had been set for a camping getaway lakeside at Boca Reservoir just outside of Truckee. Theatre tickets had been purchased for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" at Bruka in Reno, friends contacted for a rendezvous in Carson City and the sleeping bag had been tossed in the washing machine.

Yesterday, the phone call comes announcing that the road to Boca is closed and my reservation is being cancelled and refunded unless I want to stay at Stampede Reservoir (which is an additional 20 miles off the highway). Not that conducive to the sightseeing intensive itinerary I had planned. After spending an hour on-line seeking alternatives, I realize there are very few budget options for the holiday weekend. Time to get creative. Update to follow.
